Buy Cheap Garmin eTrex Vista HCx Color High-Sensitivity Mapping Handheld GPS

Buy Low Price From Here Now

Neither deep foliage nor steep canyons will faze the rugged Garmin eTrex Vista HCx navigator. Equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, the unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Vista HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. The Vista HCx also includes a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even when you're standing still, along with a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

Adding maps to the Vista HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Vista HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet.

Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Vista HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Vista HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.

The Vista HCx basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing, 1,000 waypoints with names and graphic symbols, a built-in patch antenna, a USB interface, a hunt/fish calendar, sun and moon information, and a geocaching mode. The Vista HCx, which runs for up to 25 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box

eTrex Vista HCx, basemap, MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.

"A few caveats to consider when buying any Garmin eTrex GPS" 2010-04-18

By William W. Davis

QUICK SUMMARY: The Vista HCx is a fine choice for outdoors use, but can serve as a road map, too. However, my experience with the Garmin Venture Cx dampens my enthusiasm for this device. Read on to learn why.

Background: This is my second GPS purchase. My first was four years ago when I bought the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx before a road trip to North Carolina where I was going hiking for a few days on the Appalachian Trail. This new Garmin offering, the Vista HCx, is essentially like my old Venture Cx except it has a compass and altimeter, and a chip that supposedly does a better job at finding and tracking satellites, even under a lot of obstructions (I haven't gone hiking yet with the Vista HCx to know that for sure).

A lot has already been said about the Vista HCx, so let me make only four points, based upon my experience with Garmin and my eTrex Venture Cx.

1) Be wary about the black, rubber band that goes around the four edges of the Vista HCx -- it's prone to stretching and detaching from the GPS. After three years, the black band around my Venture Cx hung limply around the device's housing. I can still use the GPS, but I have to align the rubberized buttons "just so" before I can use the GPS functions.

2) Garmin won't send you a replacement rubber band if the black rubber band does stretch and detach from your eTrex GPS. Plead all you want, talk to a Garmin supervisor, but they won't send you any replacement parts for your Garmin -- they want you to ship your GPS to them so they can send you a refurb GPS. They'll want you to spend $100 (really!) to fix something that should cost about $5 to fix. If you negotiate hard, you can get them to halve that cost, down to $49. They'll send you a refurb GPS for a problem that should only cost you a few bucks and some glue to repair. Stupid!!

3) Maybe because it's new, but the Vista HCx takes a LOT more pressure to depress the GPS's side buttons (I'm comparing my Vista HCx to my 4-year-old Venture Cx). I used a postal scale to get an idea of the difference. My Venture Cx takes about two pounds of pressure to click a button, the Vista HCx takes about four pounds of pressure. Maybe that eases some after using it for a while, I don't know.

4) If you're new to Garmin, be forewarned that the map loading process can be a horrible experience for some -- but not all -- Garmin owners. You'll need to buy City Navigator NT if your want to use road maps on your Vista HCx, and then later, you can buy the nuvi Map Updates to update your City Navigator road maps. At the least, loading maps onto your Garmin GPS is more troublesome than you'd think it would be. Be sure to read carefully how to load maps onto your device. BTW, you'll need to buy a microSD memory card (at least 2GB) to load all of North America onto your GPS.

One last thing. When doing the setup for the Vista HCx's compass, be sure to lay it on a flat surface when you spin it slowly twice in the same direction. My compass setup kept failing because I was spinning it on my laptop (which was on my lap, so it wasn't quite flat). The setup worked just fine once I put the Vista HCx on the coffee table.

I've really enjoyed having my eTrex Venture Cx, and was disappointed that the Venture HCx (the latest model) no longer has a microSD card slot anymore, so I had to pay the extra $$$ to buy the Vista HCx which has a microSD card slot.

Conclusion: At least now, if you buy, you'll be buying with your eyes wide open, knowing some of the potential pitfalls of your purchase decision. I like the eTrex series because they're rugged, watertight, small, you can operate them with one hand, they're accurate, and they're versatile. I can recommend the eTrex series, with the noted concerns I named above. If you buy this GPS, I might see you on the Appalachian Trail this summer!

 "Great little GPS unit." 2010-04-09

By Z. J. Garcia (Idaho Falls, ID USA)

I like this unit. It is compact, light, user friendly, and versatile. It is fairly comparable to the e-Trex Legend CX with a few little additions. I did not understand the benefit of the extra sensitive receiver and thought that it would be more accurate, but that did not seem to be the case when I used it. The benefit of the extra sensitive receiver (just to make it clear in case you thought the same as me) is that it keeps the accuracy under heavy cover just as if you were standing in an open field. Hope this helps.

Looking for a "walking" GPS? You have just found it! This unit is small, light weight, multi-featured and dependable. My use was to track distance walked in my daily walking program. It is the perfect tool. Easy to use and carry with a lanyard. If you are walking in remote areas it will map your trail and eliminate the danger of getting lost.

"Missing The Software - The GPS is great." 2010-03-15

By Robert P. Brady

Missing the Map Source Trip @ Waypoint Manager Software. Take that into account when you are comparing prices. Consider the true price is having to buy the software at $29.99 plus whatever shipping charge. I would buy the GPS again and recommend it to a friend. But I would buy it from someone else!!!!!!

This is a very convenient way to buy ink for my printer. I may also need to buy a few individual taks for the colors that are consumed more rapidly, but the 8-tank set is a great idea.

"Works, but a bit sloppy" 2009-09-10
By Leonard Foster (Arizona)
The ink seems to work well in the printer, however the cartridges really leak as you are putting them in, so be sure you are wearing rubber gloves when you install them. Other than that I was supprised at the lack of problems. I have tried other refills and have had nothing but difficulties, but these (so far) seem to work quite well.

4 stars only because of the leakyness.

"Buy Canon - DO NOT BUY REFURBISHED" 2009-08-11
By cyberlizard
You'll notice the option to buy refurbished ink at a much lower price. Don't do it!!

After buying and using 3 sets of refurbished ink from Abacus 24/7, I learned the hard way that they are not the same as Canon. Yep, they are cheaper, but you get what you pay for. After about a year of using off market ink, my ink jets became completely clogged. Cleaning and deep cleaning provided no relief. $150 later for professional repair and replacement with actual Canon ink finally fixed my i9900.

Doesn't it seem ridiculous that one has to buy all new peripherals when "upgrading" to Vista? I'm not sure if this is completely Microsoft's fault or if the peripheral manufacturers are colaberating, but it is ridiculous and wasteful. The product was fine but so was the five your old product it replaced which is not supported by Vista.

"Useless Junk on an iMac" 2009-10-03
By Cresence (Gainesville, VA)
I am currently running an iMac with Snow Leopard. The LiDE 200 was purchased to support an at-home job that I hoped to get and where a scanner was a requirement. This review should serve as a warning to any Mac user hoping to use Canon's Canoscan products.

I took care to install the latest Canon driver and software from its web site, which claimed comptability with Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The driver published as of early October 2009 is NOT compatible with my computer. It seems to cause the scanner to make bleating sounds on occasion, but the driver cannot in fact be used to scan documents of any kind. So I have a scanner that, at this point, is completely useless.

This is similar to an experience I had over the summer with a Canon LiDE 100. Initially that scanner worked. However, as Apple patched and upgraded Leopard (Mac OS 5.x), the driver failed, and that scanner, too, became inoperable. I consulted extensively with Canon about this problem. They were never able to give a satisfactory answer. In fact, I received a number of contradictory solutions which, further, sometimes reflected a complete lack of understanding of how the Canon drivers were actually being installed on an iMac.

Thus, you take your chances when you buy a Canoscan scanner. Canon does not observe good driver design for the Mac's, fails to make timely upgrades to keep pace with Apple's own upgrades to its operating systems, and cannot provide sensible technical support for its driver problems.

By the way, I lost the job opportunity, and the failure of Canon to properly support its scanner was, in the end, the primary factor. Thanks, Canon. This isn't the kind of thing a user forgets.

its cheap and it scans well if you scan it into pdf. found that other formats were creating files of huge size. not great if you have send documents in email etc. but once I started using scan into pdf document, i found quality to be very good and size much smaller ( < 100kb )..also some features are nice like multiple page pdf scans where all pages are scanned into one pdf file so you don't have all your pages as seperate files. use it once in a while. i think its pretty good for its price.

"Simplicity, Economy, Ease of Use" 2009-10-01
By C. L. Smith (Maryland)
Bought a new laptop, no parallel port.

Then read that USB to parallel printer cables will probably not work with older parallel scanners.

Saw that it would be cheaper for me to buy a new low-cost USB scanner than to try to adapt my old parallel scanners to my new laptop.

Am glad now that I bought this new Canon LIDE-100.

If you want to read about all the finer things in life, resolution, saturation, depth, high speed, then read somebody else's review.

This review is just from a little guy with a little computer.

And simple needs.

My new Canon LIDE-100 is simple.

Cheap to buy, easy to use, lightweight and compact.

Mine is the cat's whisker.

Another man may think it's a piece of junk, but I like it.

It fit my budget, it fit my laptop, it fit my IQ, and my available desk space.

My LIDE-100 has found an appreciative owner.

We share mutual respect.

It recognizes my limitations, as I recognize its value.

I called out for simplicity, economy, good looks, up-to-date features.

And this little Canon scanner answered the challenge.

you need only one cable, and it's in the box.

Did I mention that it's really easy to use?

For what I want, I want equipment that's easy to understand, and without too many extra features that might could go haywire.

Simple tools last longer you know.

Yes I could have bought a four-in-one.

But you know, if my input or output side of that machine went south, then I'd be making this same decision all over again.

Now, stand-alone scanner, stand-alone printer, I don't have all my eggs in one basket.

You didn't want to hear that philosophy maybe, but I stuck it in there anyway.

Want to just hear my take on the LIDE-100?

Awesome.

Lightweight, compact, simple, fast, plenty good enough for the average Joe.

My real name's not Joe, but you get my drift.

C L Smith

 "Great...for the price" 2009-09-28
By Cheryl Johnson (FL)
I bought this scanner to be used in the car. My husband is a land surveyor and needs to send in his field notes while on the job so we needed something fairly compact in size. I also didn't want to pay a lot because it will sit in a hot car all day and I don't want to spend a lot to replace it when it eventually fails...through no fault of its own. (Although the last scanner we owned lasted over two years and still worked great when we gave it to someone else)

This scanner isn't as clear as the one we did own, but it works well enough for what we use it for...which is just basic document scanning. If you're looking to scan important photos or documents you may want to go for something a little more expensive. But, for plain document scanning or basic photo scanning, this should do you just fine.

"For the price, this little scanner can't be beat!" 2009-09-23
By Adam S. Roades (Centreville, VA USA)
I bought this Canon scanner to replace an old scanner that had bit the dust. While we don't tend to use it on a regular basis, the occasional need for a photocopy makes this a gem of a find. It's small footprint and single cable (USB, no separate power cord) means the installation is a snap. The one-button functions take some time to trigger the software, but once it's up and running, it works flawlessly. My wife and I homeschool our kids and easily making copies of worksheets for additional practice on the fly has been invaluable.

 "Incredible Scanner" 2009-09-22

This scanner is incredible. It is light, slim, and scans easily and efficiently. I especially love that it can scan straight to pdf documents which makes very clear copies that are easy to email. I use it for general home-office purposes and, even if it cost twice as much I'd still be just as very happy. Especially considering the cost, I can't imagine anyone being anything but 'stoked' using this excellent product!

"What do they make this stuff of?" 2009-09-20
By Grumpy (Lubbock TX)
I used this item exactly 3 times since I bought it months ago. The first time the so-called lock broke. No big deal, because I just use it on my desk. Then today, the third time I am using it, the lid just came apart as I was opening it. No, I did not pull it apart. No, I am not particularly strong, and I do not have a history of breaking things. I also do not have kids who may have messed with the scanner in my absence. The truth is, this item is made with the cheapest, flimsiest plastic available on the planet. If Canon used toilet paper, it may actually be more solid. I hope I'll be able to get at least 10 uses out of it before it breaks in two. I will not purchase Canon items again, thank you very much.
