 "A few caveats to consider when buying any Garmin eTrex GPS" 2010-04-18

QUICK SUMMARY: The Vista HCx is a fine choice for outdoors use, but can serve as a road map, too. However, my experience with the Garmin Venture Cx dampens my enthusiasm for this device. Read on to learn why.





Background: This is my second GPS purchase. My first was four years ago when I bought the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx before a road trip to North Carolina where I was going hiking for a few days on the Appalachian Trail. This new Garmin offering, the Vista HCx, is essentially like my old Venture Cx except it has a compass and altimeter, and a chip that supposedly does a better job at finding and tracking satellites, even under a lot of obstructions (I haven't gone hiking yet with the Vista HCx to know that for sure).





A lot has already been said about the Vista HCx, so let me make only four points, based upon my experience with Garmin and my eTrex Venture Cx.





1) Be wary about the black, rubber band that goes around the four edges of the Vista HCx -- it's prone to stretching and detaching from the GPS. After three years, the black band around my Venture Cx hung limply around the device's housing. I can still use the GPS, but I have to align the rubberized buttons "just so" before I can use the GPS functions.





2) Garmin won't send you a replacement rubber band if the black rubber band does stretch and detach from your eTrex GPS. Plead all you want, talk to a Garmin supervisor, but they won't send you any replacement parts for your Garmin -- they want you to ship your GPS to them so they can send you a refurb GPS. They'll want you to spend $100 (really!) to fix something that should cost about $5 to fix. If you negotiate hard, you can get them to halve that cost, down to $49. They'll send you a refurb GPS for a problem that should only cost you a few bucks and some glue to repair. Stupid!!





3) Maybe because it's new, but the Vista HCx takes a LOT more pressure to depress the GPS's side buttons (I'm comparing my Vista HCx to my 4-year-old Venture Cx). I used a postal scale to get an idea of the difference. My Venture Cx takes about two pounds of pressure to click a button, the Vista HCx takes about four pounds of pressure. Maybe that eases some after using it for a while, I don't know.





4) If you're new to Garmin, be forewarned that the map loading process can be a horrible experience for some -- but not all -- Garmin owners. You'll need to buy City Navigator NT if your want to use road maps on your Vista HCx, and then later, you can buy the nuvi Map Updates to update your City Navigator road maps. At the least, loading maps onto your Garmin GPS is more troublesome than you'd think it would be. Be sure to read carefully how to load maps onto your device. BTW, you'll need to buy a microSD memory card (at least 2GB) to load all of North America onto your GPS.





One last thing. When doing the setup for the Vista HCx's compass, be sure to lay it on a flat surface when you spin it slowly twice in the same direction. My compass setup kept failing because I was spinning it on my laptop (which was on my lap, so it wasn't quite flat). The setup worked just fine once I put the Vista HCx on the coffee table.





I've really enjoyed having my eTrex Venture Cx, and was disappointed that the Venture HCx (the latest model) no longer has a microSD card slot anymore, so I had to pay the extra $$$ to buy the Vista HCx which has a microSD card slot.





Conclusion: At least now, if you buy, you'll be buying with your eyes wide open, knowing some of the potential pitfalls of your purchase decision. I like the eTrex series because they're rugged, watertight, small, you can operate them with one hand, they're accurate, and they're versatile. I can recommend the eTrex series, with the noted concerns I named above. If you buy this GPS, I might see you on the Appalachian Trail this summer!

I like this unit. It is compact, light, user friendly, and versatile. It is fairly comparable to the e-Trex Legend CX with a few little additions. I did not understand the benefit of the extra sensitive receiver and thought that it would be more accurate, but that did not seem to be the case when I used it. The benefit of the extra sensitive receiver (just to make it clear in case you thought the same as me) is that it keeps the accuracy under heavy cover just as if you were standing in an open field. As mentioned in another review, because of the stiffness and shape of the 405cx, it could not fit around the mount because the mount itself became too large to wrap the watch around. I ended up cutting out the thick inner arch on the the non-Garmin side; despite doing this there was no problem using the included ties (to keep the mount on the bike while the watch is not on it). This handle bar mount works well with my Forerunner 305 (mounted to an early vintage Stump Jumper without any suspension). I have a bunch of other stuff on my bars (Garmin Etrex Vista HCx, and a Cannondale speedometer), so I appreciated the simple and space saving design. I think I saw another review that suggested that it would be nice to have the ability to "flip the screen" upside down on the forerunner series so that the antenna was pointing up while on the bar mount, and I concur. However, that being said, I have not been able to measure any appreciable error while mounted right next to the Etrex Vista (which has the antenna pointed in an optimal orientation). It is really nice to have the Forerunner mounted to the handle bars rather than my wrist while mountain biking! It leaves my hands and wrists free to wipe sweat, and deflect branches. It is possible to work the buttons (imposable when on your wrist while riding), and I'm counting on the fact that the Forerunner will be less likely to be damaged in a crash when mounted to the bike rather than my body (as yet untested). I would recommend this product to a friend.

Pros: The Garmin user interface is very easy to use. The maps and POI database that I downloaded from the Garmin website are reasonably up to date. The screen is clearly visible even in direct sunlight. Simple point to point routing works quite well.





Cons: This unit is severely underpowered. POI searches can sometimes take forever - even a simple search can take 20-30 seconds. Planning a trip from San Francisco to Boston yielded an insufficient memory error (by comparison, my Magellan GPS calculated such a route in just a few seconds). Booting up the unit can take many seconds (not including acquiring satellite signals) during which you have to wait before you can start driving. This unit doesn't have any trip planning capabilities which is very disappointing after having used multi-stop trip planning extensively on both my built-in Toyota GPS and my Magellan GPS.





Conclusion: This is perhaps a good GPS unit for a beginner but for almost the same price you can buy a Magellan GPS which does everything much faster - my only complaints about my Magellan is that its user interface is harder to use and its screen is unreadable in bright sunlight.

In the display photos, there appears a very nice carry case (red lining interior) and storage for both the unit and cords. Its one of the features that 'coaxed' me into picking this specific Nuvi ensemble. Was very disappointed that this is not included in the purchase - even though it is prominenly displayed (why have that particular photo in the series therefore?? - since other photos already show the unit itself, etc). Then...when I went back to the web page and scrolled way way down to the "what's in the box" section - I realized of course what a deceptive practice I had fallen victim to. Doesn't make me think less of Garmin - but does leave a terrible and unecessary (and avoidable) bad taste in my mouth vis-a-vis Amazon and its partners - and the depceptive selling practice that seems to be allowed. I bought this to protect my new eTrex Vista HCx, and I will probably not be using it. I think I threw away the package otherwise I would return it. This case supposedly fits any eTrex, but I do not think it fits the Vista HCx very well. The "joystick" that you use to control the majority of navigation through the menus gets bumped by the case all the time, and the case really is not cut right because if you fully insert the unit into the case, the joystick is mostly covered up by the case.


Buy at your own risk, it appears there are much better cases out there. I am going to be buying a ZAGG invisible shield screen protector and probably a Foarm case.

With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing


This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I? Where's My Car?


The nüvi 7x5 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?" At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin's Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide. Choose from Panoramio's collection of photos from around the world. Easy to use interface displays photos on Google Maps. Search for photos by location name or map area boundary. Transfer photos directly from Garmin Connect to device with the Garmin Communicator. View photos in Google Earth. Supports Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2+, Safari 3+ on Windows and Mac.

it is almost impossible to properly type in a location as the keys are too close together. You would have thought with a bigger screen this would not have been a problem.

I just received my GPS a few days ago, but so far I love it. I've read other reviews, and the only negative comment that I seemed to notice was that the touch screen was finicky. So far, I haven't noticed this issue once. I love the fast GPS updates, the speed limit display, and the fact that it speaks and displays the street names on the route. My friends and family all have the basic Garmin that you can get for $100, but for $80 more this is much worth the money!

This being my 1st GPS & after months of research I wonder how I ever did without it! Map upgrade & registration were very easy & trouble free, of course I use a MAC! I have used it on many local statewide trips & just recently a 2000+ mile trip. WORKED FLAWLESSLY! Traffic updates in Atlanta, GA warned me so I could avoid the traffic jams, custom & built in POI's were wonderful, ease of use we were all playing with it without any problems.

This is our 3rd Garmin GPS. The features are awesome, the navigation is spot on. However, the unit is balky, routinely freezes up for a second between commends. The bluetooth seems to be kind of unreliable with a Blackberry, not a new problem for Garmin. The touchscreen is off, albeit only slightly. I have large fingers, so this may cause it. My wife doesn't seem to have issues.


This being Garmin's bazillionth generation GPS, you'd think these routine isues would be a thing of the past. Kinda sorry we didn't go with a new one.
