The pictures this little camera takes are excellent. Lots of detail and great colors. It is very easy to use. Just point and shoot! Or, study the manual and try some of the special conditions settings for even better pictures.



It is a perfect size for adult size hands. The controls are very intuitive. I was able to shoot 450 pictures in Europe on one set of AA Lithium batteries. The batteries still have life. In total, I have taken around 800 pictures on that set of batteries and they are still going.



Outdoor pictures in daylight conditions are absolutely stunning!

I spent a year with a Canon Powershot A60 and I thought the picture quality was spectacular. We are talking only 2 megapixels here. So I got the A1100 IS with 12.1 megapixels and expected to be BLOWN AWAY. What I got, especially for landscapes, looked like very bad polaroids from the 1970s. Bad colors and unfocused. You Gotta Be Kidding Me. Canon's email help sent me the steps to reset the camera defaults. I did that but to no avail. Next step: their toll free phone service ... after talking with a very helpful service rep he realized I wasn't a total dilettante and advised me to return the item.



So I brought it back to the location of purchase and invited all the sales reps to see for themselves. They decided it was the camera and not an inept customer. They even pulled another A1100 IS off of their shelf and tried that with the same results. I received a full refund, but was very disappointed because, after all, I wanted a camera!



I believe that a bad lot must have rolled off the Canon production line. What else could explain such low quality? Certainly the prototypes could not have been this pathetic. The more positive customer reviews indicate that some good batches shipped out. (It is a surprise since I had a Canon AE-1 SLR 35mm in the good old days of film and it was awesome.) Caveat Emptor. (In bolface, italics, and underlined. Add a gazillion exclamation points.)

A lot has changed since my last camera purchase in 2003.

I purchased this camera for my Vacation to Las Vegas. I wanted a High End Point and Shoot Camera.

What amazed me most about this camera was the 20X zoom and the FUll HD Video. I used the Full HD Video to capture clips that were almost impossible to capture taking a normal picture due to so much movement. I thought the pictures were amazing, but then again I had an old NIkon 4300 coolpix I paid 500 for with.

The day pictures were Awesome, and the night pictures were good. The only night pictures that came out amazing where the vegas lights on the casinos. The flash feature work great, but only in a limited area not a huge casino.



This camera comes with video cables so you can quickly show off your pictures. I highly reccomend to purchased 16gb class6 or higher memory, so You can take advantage of the video feature.



I purchased the pre rechargeable Eneeloop batteries along with the Lacross charger bc-700. These batteries can hold there charge up to 12 months with no use. The normal rechargeable batteries will die with in 30 days even if the camera is not used.

I'm not one for writing reviews, but I feel like I should share my thoughts on the Canon SX1 IS for any shoppers out there. The SX1 IS is one of the best point-and-shoot cameras you can buy. Its loaded with features and is well-built. Most people would probably not regret buying this camera. However, for those of you out there that are trying to get excellent photo quality... I think you will be disappointed. There are some noise issues and it seems like pictures never come out crisply in focus. We're actually selling ours now after giving it about 4 months. We decided to make the jump to a true dSLR which is more a little more expensive and not as feature-laden, but offers uncompromising photo quality.



So, if you are looking for a lot of bang for your buck and good pictures, this is a great camera for you. If you don't want to compromise on picture quality, then save yourself some grief and drop an extra $100-$200 on a dSLR like the Canon 450D (XSi) or the Nikon D3000 or D5000. Good luck!

I bought the camera because of its features, not its portability. It is as described bulky for a point-and-shoot. The multitude of preset exposure options (snow, night scenes, etc.) are good - but I rarely use them. I rely mostly on the Program, Aperture priority, and Shutter priority modes. Manual mode is a bit cumbersome requiring one to toggle between shutter and aperture settings. The display is stunning and the display modes which include viewing the histogram are excellent. Picture quality is excellent and the image stabilization works as well as expected. The ability to shoot at close to 4 fps (in some modes) is a real nice feature for a point-and-shoot. I had not planned to get much use out of the video features but am finding this to be a real nice capability.



My primary reasons for buying were size (yes its big, but still smaller than SLRs and with many of the same features), use of AA batteries (which adds to its size, but allows for being able to slip in a set of fresh batteries just about anywhere), and the ability to capture RAW (hence why I don't rely on the preset options). And, oh yes, the zoom. The massive zoom is fantastic.



The lens cap design could do with a bit of an improvement. There is no tether and due to my clumsiness I've inadvertently knocked it off a couple times. The hood is a nice design.

I've always wanted a good camera. I've spent thousands of dollars trying to find the camera that would take pictures to impress and amaze people. A friend of mine is a great photographer and after about 3 or 4 cameras I realized it probably was NOT the camera but the photographer. My Sony had died and I was looking for something a bit better. I had a different camera in mind, but found this one which had a lot of features that I wanted, at a reasonable price and was rated fairly high by Consumer's Report. I bought it and began to love to take pictures. The quality is excellent and finally people are commenting about how great my pictures are. Many of the features are foreign to me, being a very hack photographer, but you can pick up the camera and just use it.



The two things I would point out about this camera that warrant 5 stars are.....picture quality and flexibility. The zoom lense is amazing. You won't be sorry you bought this camera. While all features may not warrant 5 stars, the overal quality and convenience of this camera does.

I liked it so much, I had begun leaving my Nikon full size digital SLR's at home. So I grabbed this SX1 with the promise of not dropping it high on my 'things to not-do' list.



You'll read all the good stuff that everyone posts- and I agree but here are some very minor downsides:



- Battery life when using flash... sucks big time.

- You need an annoying filter adapter to use any filters. The threads you see in the front of the lens look and smell like 52mm, but they are not cut as threads, they are concentric rings. For some reason, you need a bayonet type mount adapter to run a filter in front. I always mount a UV (clear glass) in front to protect the lens itself. I also bought a 52>62mm step-up ring and a 62mm UV. This causes a shadow during extreme close up macro, so that's the downside to a 62mm, but there is no vignetting on the super-wide settings, so that's a plus.



Love that wide angle lens, and the telephoto is particularly intense.



I like the huge live display screen.

I purchased this in Japan in great haste because my much better Panasonic TZ4 was stolen. It has some limitations but it was, under the circumstances, a reasonable last minute substitute for the stolen camera and it used the SD flash memory used in the TZ4--and it was much cheaper than the Japanese version of the TZ4 (labelled the TZ7 which doesn't seem to be marketed in the US). The lack of image stabilization meant that a few pictures went awry--a few more than I would have expected with the TZ4. I missed the 28mm wide angle of the TZ4 occasionally and, on a few occasions,the 280 mm telephoto. But it is 10mp and I can blow up some shots where the 280 telephoto would have been useful. In all I took over 1700 pictures and most turned out OK. The batteries (I'm not entirely sure they were alkaline--they had Japanese labels) lasted about 200 shots plus or minus, but I turned it on and off with great frequency--perhaps 850 times for 1700 shots (which, possibly, drains the battery a great deal?). As a main camera I'd still go with the Panasonic TZ series but the TZ4 costs more than twice what this costs on Amazon.com. For occasional use, especially in situations where one can take time to compose and hold the camera steady, it seems to be a good camera at a low price.

For an entry level camera, 12MP and 6X zoom can't be beat. Add the 3 inch LCD and you've got one great camera. One easilly overlooked attribute is the fact that this cam takes 2 AA batteries and appears stingy with power usage, given the above features. We had an older model that chewed through 4 AAs like candy. Great camera... on the higher end of entry-level but worth the price.

I researched cameras for weeks and read a large number of reviews before buying this one. I was torn between it, a Lumix, and a wide angle Cannon that had 12x zoom. I am so glad I chose this one. I just used it on a trip the MI UP and took pictures of the kids, scenery, Lake Superior under sun and fog, sunsets, the full moon, foliage, you name it. LOVE the macro, colors are really gorgeous, landscapes (I took the same shot with the auto and landscape to compare, color obviously better on the landscape mode) and moon shots amazing. I had some blurring on my action shots of the kids in motion when it was on auto (I didn't switch to kids/pets since its supposed to adjust on its own). The zoom was great, needed a tripod for the full moon, but made due with propping it on a can that was handy. A couple times I was annoyed to wait between snopshots for it to set again, but it was faster than any I've used previously. My family has been nothing but compliments on the picture quality that resulted from the trip, and I agree there was definite improvement compared to my last camera, the Cannon A1000. So, for a busy Mom that wants quality and ease, small size/portability, this was it. Great versatility, and I'm looking forward to investigating its other features like b&w and sepia exposures, etc. Oh, after all of a 4 day weekend, my batteries were still good; I used it the following weekend at the Renaissance festival, still charged, and only regular cheap batteries.

I have a Canon Rebel and love it, but because of it's size I hardly never had it with me when I was out and about. I needed something smaller with the same power and same controls. My picture clarity is wonderful. The dial on top lets me switch from portrait to landscape quick and easy. The only thing I was worried about when I purchased it was the view screen did not swivel shut to protect the screen. I simply put a screen protector over it and I've had no worries ever since. I really appreciate the feature that allows you to view the pictures in the sun. My old Canon doesn't allow you to do so. I liked this camera so much I bought the older model A1000 for my Son for Christmas because it was a demo model. I would buy another one in a heart beat.

The lack of image stabilization meant that a few pictures went awry--a few more than I would have expected with the TZ4. I missed the 28mm wide angle of the TZ4 occasionally and, on a few occasions,the 280 mm telephoto. But it is 10mp and I can blow up some shots where the 280 telephoto would have been useful. In all I took over 1700 pictures and most turned out OK. The batteries (I'm not entirely sure they were alkaline--they had Japanese labels) lasted about 200 shots plus or minus, but I turned it on and off with great frequency--perhaps 850 times for 1700 shots (which, possibly, drains the battery a great deal?). As a main camera I'd still go with the Panasonic TZ series but the TZ4 costs more than twice what this costs on Amazon.com. For occasional use, especially in situations where one can take time to compose and hold the camera steady, it seems to be a good camera at a low price.

Well reviewed, great little camera at the best price around on Amazon. I wanted a camera that would produce great pictures, be small and easy to use, and also be relatively durable for a child. This is the one that all my research pointed me to. So far we have not been disappointed.
