 "Can't go wrong with this." 2009-10-16

I don't write many reviews, only on products that I think will truly help all. I have a Canon T1i, my first DSLR, and I was really bothered by the grip not being long enough like a Canon 50D. I was ready to return the camera and buy a 50D because of the feel, but wanted to try this first. I can honestly say that if you have the same issue as me, this grip should help with it. I no longer have grip issues with the camera when I attached this. I have a Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 Lens and its a heavy beast, and with this grip, it makes handheld shooting a lot easier.

Secondly...battery life! With the stock battery, I could take about 300 pictures and the battery needed charging. After I added this grip with the two Opteka batteries it came with, I haven't needed to charge the battery in about two weeks and have snapped about 600 photos so far, AND the battery meter still shows full. If you are going on vacation, this might be a good choice because you probably will never need to charge your batteries. Only thing it will add bulk to the camera.

The one thing I don't like about it....is the dial on the grip. You know the one that lets you adjust the settings. It doesn't seem well built to me. Its hard to turn sometimes, its kinda sunken into,...it gets sticky sometimes. Minor as I don't shoot portrait style a lot, but just thought I mention it.

super long battery life with this thing. Opteka uses the same molds as the Canon grips, so form factor is indentical. Quality may be a little less than Canon, but considering you are paying half of what Canon charges, I can take the hit in quality. everything works great as it should. In addition to getting it a lot cheaper than the Canon brand, you also get two high capacity batteries.

I must say that I was a bit skeptical on choosing the Opteka one, compared to the original CANON Grip, since I already owned one (at my REBEL XT)..



After a little bit of review searches over the internet, a lot of people saying that it was basically the same thing, without the CANON brand...



I got the Opteka grip and I am really satisfied with it. Price is good and it comes with 2 good bateries with it.

Hard to beat...



My only comment would go to the finish of the product, the rubber grip is acctually not properly fitted to the grip (as per photos which I added up to this review), to which I had to use SUPER Glue Gel to get it fully bonded to the grip, only a minor detail thing that could be a drawback only to someone looking for 101% perfection, but, the CANON one which I own did not have this issue, which I believe is mainly because of the material used.



Sure, I must also say that the rubber on the grip is actually REAL RUBBER ! Therefore, gives you a GREAT GRIP! Even better then the CANON one, which mimics the Rubber grip with some plastic Rugged feel.



Overall... I say ! Give it a 10..

No need to purchase the Canon one and pay twice as much !

This will definatelly be a perfect match, as I do not see me using just the camera without the grip.



Oh! And another thing I must say is how the Camera + Grip are quite lighter than my previous Rebel XT Bundle.

The quality assurance processes of Opteka are non existant, since this product was delivered to me twice with hidden faults that prevented its use. Luckily, Amazon customer service replaced it twice with no extra costs and in a very short time. Next time I will probably not buy again Opteka products. The quality of the supporting stand should be improved, as it bends under the weight of the display to the point of detaching itself under the smallest vibration!

Product will play only part of the pictures in the memory card (up to 1005 images), while all other images are ignored.

Also has many problems in browsing the file system on the memory card and will unexpectedly avoid listing some of the files.

Menu has bugs and is unproductive.

Picture quality is good only as long one watches from the above.

The Opteka is an ok 15" Digital Picture frame. It is attractive and has a bright, crisp wide angle display (1024x768). But it has some major bugs as of the model available in Oct 2009.



As of the model I got in Oct 2009 from Amazon (price around $180 at the time), there are some details in the description and some reviews which are no longer accurate -- the frame is being updated/changed over time. Apparently this is the 3rd or 4th revision (according to the tech support guy with whom I had some long conversations).



Relevant items that are correct:

- the manual is horribly written

- 4:3, 1024x768, wood frame

- has a remote

- auto displays from card inserted into frame



Changes:



Description said: "Wall mountable in landscape mode" - the unit I got could be wall mounted in either portrait or landscape mode although landscape is more natural so it puts the on/off switch on the side. Based on the frame orientation (on desk or on wall) the frame auto rotates images so that pictures appear with the correct side up depending on whether the frame is oriented in landscape or portrait mode.



Reviews on June 5, 2008 and Dec 11, 2008 said that it had a panel at the back to contain the AC adapter. This was not true of the model I got -- there was no AC adapter compartment at all. Although there was a large "notch" where the AC adapter could be taped/velcroed into place behind the frame. I did this so I could hang it on a wall where I have a plug in the middle of the wall and not have any cords showing (a separately purchased flat right angle plug adapter helped tremendously).



Review on Dec 11, 2008 said "Ability to handle LOTS of pictures: Presented with a flash drive that had over 4,000 pictures in a single folder" -- well I put an SD card in with 1519 pictures and it would not display them. I used a PC to transfer all of them to internal memory, it still would not display any of them -- just left me in menu mode. It would not display pictures individually either -- would not even show file names. When I organized the pictures into separate folders of 400 or so each, then it finally would display them.



Another review said it was hard to remove SD cards, this is no longer correct. SD cards pop in and out easily using the push in to pop out release mechanism common in cameras.





Other notes:



I could not find a way to have the frame display pictures in a random order from an SD Card -- they always seem to start from the beginning and proceed forward in order.



The pictures start automatically when the frame turned on (some frames I've had require user intervention).



***IMPORTANT #1*** It is extremely hard to transfer pictures from inserted memory card into built in memory -- you must manually select each picture to move and then move it using remote -- very tedious. Other frames I've had would auto load all images from a card -- this is much more convenient. The only way to mass move pictures onto the frame's built in memory is using a Windows PC (according to the manual) and the supplied USB cable -- in which case the frame pretends it is a 1GB USB drive and you do all the loading from the PC side. Strangely when you put the frame into this PC USB mode by hooking it up, the frame displays a picture of a current day Apple iMac -- weird. This transfer mechanism means that Grandpa would have a hard time loading up new pictures. But you could send new SD cards to him periodically to pop in the side of the frame.



***IMPORTANT #2*** The frame has some odd bugs. If you have more than 500 or 600 pictures in any given directory, it will refuse to show any pictures. I copied 1519 pictures on the the frame as well as onto an SD card and the frame would only display the menu, would never display any pictures. When I separated pictures into folders of 400-500 each, it would then display pictures. But after a while we noticed that it would rotate through only the same set of 400-500 or so. It would never display the others. I could not figure out any rhyme or reason behind the order of display or why it chose only those.



The remote is hard to use -- must be directly in front of frame and fairly close. Buttons are hard to push accurately -- sometimes you cannot seem to press a button and other times it gets double clicked when you meant to only push it once.



I wish more digital picture frames had auto IR sensors to pause and turn off when no one was in the room and then turn on again when someone enters the room but it doesn't. It does allow you to set it to turn on and off once a day automatically based on it's internal clock. I did not find any other automatic ways to turn it off and on.



Overall I'm ok with the frame as it looks good on our dining room wall, for the jpegs it displays it displays them well, has no cords hang down from it, and is easy to turn off and on using the switch on its side. I really wish it had an IR sensor, would load pictures from memory cards more easily, would pick up showing photos wherever it left off and/or show photos randomly, and would actually display all pictures loaded into it or on memory cards inserted on it.

Great looking product. Lacks display options: randomness of pictures display. It also always starts from the first picture once it's turned off and back on again instead of where it left off; take that with the fact that the pictures start from the very first again, then it's not as surprising and exciting. A little more programming/display options would make this an awosome product!



Oh, yeah... better instruction in the manual as to how to delete and transfer pictures onto the internal memory would greatly help! Although after a little playing around with it, can be figured out.

I bought this for use with my 40D. I was doing a lot of shooting with the camera held in one hand and a flash held in the other. The trouble was, I couldn't really operate the camera with one hand. For example, after shooting a couple of frames, I would want to switch to playback mode and review the images. I found I couldn't press the "play" button with the hand holding the camera. So I was left juggling the camera and the flash.



I thought that with this strap, I would be able to completely hold and operate the camera with one hand. Unfortunately when you have your hand in the strap and the camera is completely hanging off one hand, you CANNOT reach any of the buttons. The shutter release is the only thing that you can reach, and that's awkward. The problem is the camera hangs down, leaving your thumb way above any of the buttons. If you want to press any of the buttons on the camera, you need to hold it with your other hand.

This is by far my most favorite accessory for my camera. I hate having the neck strap dangling all over. This is very comfortable. A couple of things could be improved. The actual strap needs a little more reinforcement. I think the metal piece on the camera will eventually cut through the nylon before the rest of the strap will wear out. The strap could be a little wider. When it passes through the padded section, that tends to bend over on itself because the strap is very narrow. I love having the camera attached to my hand. I took the camera out in New Orleans on Bourbon Street and felt completely safe like no one would try and rip it out of my hands or cut the strap and run. Overall, I would not hesitate to buy another one when this one wears out, even without the needed changes.

It has taken a bit of getting-used-to, but I'm now pretty comfortable with this wrist grip, and would definitely recommend it. Like many other reviewers, the adjustable strap was backwards when it arrived; after fiddling with it for awhile and realizing that it wasn't working, I pulled it out and put it back the other way, and it worked fine. My only complaint has to do with the big, clunky attachment to the tripod screw -- it's no longer possible to put my camera (a Pentax K20D) down on a flat surface. I miss the flat-bottom of my dSLR! Otherwise, this is a really useful accessory for those of us who don't rely on the neck strap for carrying our cameras around.

Fully charged it after some use of it already and seems as if it has the memory effect. The XSi camera's battery icon shows it has at least half of the juice left before the camera stops working. Well, you trade 1/2 of the battery capacity for 3/4 of the cost. A good deal? In the shooting field, you may have twice the chance to have to change the battery at that monemt you wish you were not, like I was. Not sure if other 3rd party batteries more or less the same issue.....

The Canon Xsi ships with, and is rated for, a 7.4v battery. This is listed as 7.2v on the box, the battery and on the Opteka website. I was told by a Marketplace Vendor that the 7.2v is a "misprint," but there is no way of truly knowing and it's enough to make me worry. I'd hate to damage a $$$$ camera over a $ battery. This one is going in the garbage and I'm going with the Canon Equivalent LP-E5 Battery which is marked with the correct information (7.4v!), has a solid reputation, and is currently selling for a better-than-amazon price on Diamondback Battery's website.

Having a new camera for taking pictures of museum artifacts (primarily), I needed spare batteries to "feed my flash." Problem was that the OEM battery (Canon) was ~$70 USD each which would reduce the number of spares I could pack. Also, the OEM charger was AC only, so would not allow for recharging while in transit. Opteka to the rescue! Inexpensive batteries and a dual AC & DC charger fit my needs exactly. I used the batteries for all day shooting of museum aircraft (lots of flash usage) and they performed at least as well as the OEM battery. Recharging was quick also, being less than 90 minutes in the car, so I could always have charged batteries on hand. Excellent value and performance overall, highly recommended for the amateur photog, perhaps even for the pro. Didn't try the Opteka batteries in the Canon wall-charger as I was the Opteka charger, so cannot comment on capability. I recommend the charger & battery combination anyway because of the DC car plug.

I was pretty excited about getting a SLR camera case for less than $20. When the case arrive the quality good but I was sorely disappointed when my Nikon D80 plus my 30-105mm zoom lens (a pretty standard package) could not fit into the case. I guess it could have fit with a 50mm fixed lens but I think it is pretty rare these days to have a SLR for regular use without some sort of zoom.



If you use a zoom lens and have a standard size SLR it will not fit and therefore, do not waste your time or money on this otherwise acceptable product.

I bought this to have something that'd look somewhat decent while shooting a wedding. Didn't end up using it there, but I have used it in other contexts, so I can say that it certainly does what it's supposed to.



Diffusers aren't terribly hard to make if you're on a tight budget. Wax paper can work wonders, but it looks tacky. So, when you need something for presentation but don't want to shell out the cash for a flash-specific diffuser, this will fit the bill.



The first thing I noticed was the typo on the instructions - instead of "Friction" it says "Frivtion". No big deal, but obviously lends to the fact that it's cheap, and you're getting what you pay for.



This isn't going to hold up to abuse, and I'd honestly be a little worried if I were using this in anything like a sporting event or when shooting a band. In those contexts, I'd recommend something a little more solid. Still, it's cheap, easy to use, and works great in a pinch.



Recommend it? Yes, if you just want something that'll fit on a bunch of flashes. Don't buy it for a regular diffuser, though, as it may not last long.
