"Great GPS for those who want top notch basic features at little cost." 2010-03-31

By V. John (San DIego, CA)

I recently bought a new car and wanted a GPS system which would compliment its features. I am coming from a Garmin Nuvi 350 which I considered to be a great GPS at the time when I bought it in 2005.

Comparison with Nuvi 350:

Pros:

- The 265T has with the features of my 350 with the exception of traffic and Bluetooth.

- The 265T basically functions the same as the 350 in terms of software but is much faster in acquiring satellites and refreshing the map.

- I thought it was wierd that they didn't make any significant changes to the software after 5 years but I can understand the concept that if its not broke, don't fix it.

- The Bluetooth works really well but I have not really tried out the traffic feature just yet.

- A great plus is that the 265T is so inexpensive but provides so much value.

- One major plus is that the 265T does not need an external antenna which needs to be raised when the GPS is in use as compared to the 350.

Cons:

- The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I didn't like that fact that the cradle was not of the quick release type which I am used to in the 350. You actually have to force the GPS unit out of the cradle.

Finally an electronic gadget that far exceeded my expectations. In every respect this Garmin Nuvi has made the work of this salesperson a lot easier. You can't beat it for the price.

"OK but not happy with accuracy" 2010-03-24

By Sharon Jin

I returned 255W the second day because I could not turn it on. it shuts off right after it is turned on. When I got 265t, it turn on eveytime I started the car, felt very esay to use, except that I have not tried using traffic.

in summary

pros:

size is perfect for me. did not bother me at all even it is smaller than the 255w. very easy to set up. voice is very clear for me. I tried Chinese, Japanese, English for fun, it is all clear and accurate. function wise, I don't need more. it is perfect if it works accurately.

cons:

Everytime it turns on, it ask me to click OK on agreement.

There is disk in the box that came with I don't know what it is for. can not find instructions or pictures in any of the user guide.

Biggest issue is with accuracy.

I tested it with the road I know.

It could not find a Carson's department store even it existed for years.

Out of 5 times I used it starting from home, it asked me to drive to opposite direction to distination. I assume if I listened to it, it will ask me to trun around but I don't know for sure. it did it only one time so far.

Last, when I arrived at work from the back road, it does not understand that I am at the destination, it ask me to drive 3 more miles to some totally wrong direction. again, I think it may correct itself if I really start driving like it told me, but I am parked next to the building and it can not recognize it.

overall, it seems like it struggles the most when it starts in the parking lot, it will not tell you what to do but ask you drive the high lighted line first, but those lines does not make sense at all. so if you just drive out of the parking lot, then it may tell you to go to the right direction. I say might is because it made a mistake once before. once you arrive, don't rely on it, but look for the building number yourself. because it seem to have no idea that you arrived especailly if you chose a different trun than it told you to.

I have to say it has not make mistakes on major road.

I am keeping it for a little longer (only used it for 3 days). for this price, I thought if it helps on the trip most of the time, I will try to live with it or get to know it better. Seems all the GPS, garmin or tomtom all have mixed reviews and I don't want to waste much time on exchangint to new uints.

 "Nuvi 265" 2010-03-18

By James Noel

I wanted text to speech --'turn right on Maple street' -- and this has it. The FM traffic is terrific. The cable is helpful because the Garmin web site offers map and other updates. The usual caution: understand how you have the unit configured (fastest/most economical/quickest) and know your options (no dirt roads, etc.). During a winter drive, it kept sending me toward unplowed dirt roads because I had asked for the fastest route. Configured properly, it is great. I keep it on every day and monitor my driving with the Eco route function. I also read that a cable option will be here soon to let it connect through your car's computer connection to provide additional information.

"Good hardware, OK software, budget GPS with traffic info" 2010-03-17

By Karunakar Pedagani (burbank, CA)

I've found that Garmin 265T has better hardware with better battery, micro SD slot and an FM (traffic) antenna. However, I felt software needs some improvements.

1. 'Points of interests (POI)' category is poorly designed. Listing is limited - it lists either set number of POIs or POIs within a set radii, hangs or works extremely slow if it cant readily find a listing.

2. options such as total distance, shortest time route, shortest distance, maximize freeways, etc listings are not really available

However, this is perhaps the cheapest GPS with the traffic feature. I live in LA, I did not have much option.
