Ok so i got the package today and instantly opened it to see my new device.
What do i notice but i huge crack in the middle of the screen. i was so pissed off and am returning it for another. The lack of a memory card really bothers me too. im going with a garmin the next time i buy a gps. If i actually recieve my new one tommorow without any defects then id say i like the gps.

I bought this unit to replace an older Tom Tom I have been using for years.
The XL 340-S has a bigger screen and an updated display system.
The mounting bracket is also great improved.
The price on Amazon was essentially half that of retail stores.
I highly recommend this unit.

I am very experienced with many gps over many years. I have used or owned numerous Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. In a world of compromise, every gps has pros and cons; and with a little reasearch it's easy to get a relatively good one for between $100-$150. when people ask me which to buy I recomend either this tomtom xl 340s or the garmin 255w. They are both easy to buy, new, for less than $140. If you're willing to go for a refurbished one (basically new, but re-boxed) they can be purchased for $100. They are both amazing bargains, but having used (and loved) the Garmin 765t(loaded model with mp3 player and traffic) on a 3000 mi trip to fla. I'd give the tomtom's IQ routing system, user interface, mounting hardware, and voice/speaker the edge. In terms of the actual hardware and software quality the tomtom is absolutely equal to the Garmin (this surprised me, both have very fast and strong reception of gps signals). I'm not sure if the screen is quite as bright, but the numerous color options for both day and night of the tomtom, make it a joy to look at (where the Garmin is a bit boring). Having used a number of Magellans, while they were very good, I did not have the same sense of quality (in particular, the screen). The xl 340s has IQ routes(other than the hard to find xl 335s, no lower model has this feature). This is supposed to compensate for things like red lights and typical trafic flow for the time of day (and possibly the day of the week). I beleive this is a substantial improvement over any other routing system available. My sense is that the Garmin system has also improved, but is not equal to the tomtom IQ routes. If you've ever had a gps take you through ten red light's to save a half mile on a 5 mile trip, you can appreciate how important this is. ---Other things that the tomtom does better. The speaker is amazingly louder and clearer than any Garmin. (the Garmin, with external power, isn't bad, but is barely audible when on only the internal battery)--The easy mount system of the tomtom, holds better and is, generally, more convenient than any other mounting system. The 765 Garmin does have a very well made system, while that of the 255w is rather crude. About the only thing that the XL 340s lacks is an SD card slot for quick map upgrades (which all the Garmins have). Unless you're using it overseas, this isn't an issue.---Warning--the only issue with the tomtom results from upgrading without removing extra, unused, digital voices (since the 2gig internal memory is somewhat limited). The tomtom tech support (though not equal to the excellent Garmin support) is pretty good. The free map upgrade takes about an hour and a half (much longer than Garmin). Just make sure to let it complete, before disconnecting anything.

I purchased this as a gift for my parents. We looked at the paper manual which is pictures and very little text. I connected it to their MAC computer and the 1st thing that happened after TomTom Home installed is it indicated CRITICAL updates were required to download to proceed. I downloaded the updates and that is when everything went wrong.
The original maps were no longer accessible. The best I could determine is the critical update was the newest map to be downloaded had superceeded the original map. After checking the newest map file size I noticed it was larger file size than the available size on the unit. This unit does not have extra memory as an option. I contacted customer service and waited over an hour to reach someone. The rep was very helpful and told me to remove some of the additional features like voices to make more room on the unit. That still did not provide enough room.
....
It has now been two weeks and the unit still does not work. I have called TomTom 4 times and e-mailed more times than I can count. The last thing I requested was for them to take back the unit and fix it. They provided a RMA to do so and I sent everything back. We just received the unit back and it is just the unit - the USB and car charging cable were not returned. The response was that we were advised to only return the original unit in it's original packaging. Since the USB and car charging cables came in the original packaging and were not additional items purchased as accessories, I shipped them back in the RMA process. Now they are telling me that they will not replace them.
I have used my Garmin GPS units for over 10 years but heard TomTom was easier to use and since this was to be a gift for my parents wanted the easist possible unit to help them out. It has been a very frustrating issue. If the response from TomTom home had not been to download critical updates to proceed we probably would have used it w/ no problem but the whole idea to have a customer download a new updated map that will not fit and it removes the original map from the unit which could not be re-installed is mind boggling. The unit has very little memory to spare what so ever and I don't even know how a customer is to use it and mark more than a few waypoints before it is completely full.
The customer service staff w/ TomTom has been very friendly but I just don't think they are up to the challenge of supporting their products. Since I was using a MAC it even caused more issues as several of the techs I talked to had limited to no knowledge of a MAC operating system. There was no option on their phone calling tree to be routed to a MAC trained staff member either. At one point the tech was going to have me purge my MAC harddrive, not the TomTom harddrive. For some less experienced their computer would have been wiped clean. And how hard is it to inventory what the customer sends you and to send it back?
I probabably cannot even return it to Amazon now because the cables are missing and what I purchased is no longer complete.

this is my second tomtom gps.i had use this unit only twice so i dont have any problems with it. it works great and only thing you would have to do is update the gps cause it comes with the old maps so you would need to go online to the their site and update it for free. its not bad for this price.
