Todd I bought a D5000 with 18-55 VR lens from Amazon last Friday (Black Friday). I paid about $ 200 less than a friend who bought the same camera, a few months ago. And ... It is not part of the recall! My biggest concern was first caught in the recall. I am very pleased to say that Amazon seems to be beyond the serial numbers - at least with the kit (camera and lens 18-55 VR). I upgraded from a D50, I bought four or more years ago. There are several reasons why I chose this camera. First, I love Nikon over other brands because they are easier to / the best menus for those of us who are not experts use. I also think that Nikon makes the best lenses. Even their cheapest kit lens has a large optical and take great pictures. Not all manufacturers say. The second thing I want to address is the lack of this inner chamber of a lens auto focus motor In other words, you need Nikon AF-S lenses, this camera. (Note:. Almost all Nikon lenses work with this camera and auto focus) I just think it's a concern for someone who is very old lenses, a different lens on the Nikon and Tamron Sigma or without built-in autofocus motor, or possibly some special lenses that autofocus is not yours. For me, I bought 4 different lenses in the last 4-5 years. They all work very well. Although it is something to consider, I think most people looking at the camera will be fine too. The lack of an internal motor means that the D5000 is a little smaller and lighter than the next step - cheaper. This makes it easy D5000 hanging around your neck and use it every day. This camera is not aimed at a professional, but is able to take professional photos. Professionals are more likely to opt for the D90 or higher. Thirdly - My D50, D40, D60, D70 and D80 cameras Generation 1 (Actually, D40 and D60, which might be called Generation 2, but they are Generation 1.5) the current line of Nikon D3000, D5000, D90 and D300s are generation of two cameras. What rating is that the generation of two cameras that take better pictures. They see things more the way the human eye sees things. I'm at that point I'm trying to learn more about photography and take better pictures. I did my research. D3000 is a lightweight camera that you can wear all day without having neck spasms. The problem with D3000 for me was that all the comments, saying the amount of noise (small purple dots that look like film grain) was presented at the pictures in the higher ISOs. D90 is a great camera with many features that appeal to all those who have no idea what ISO and F-stop means and how they affect the quality of the photo. D5000 problem, until recently, been that the price was for the D90. There was absolutely no reason not to take the extra step to the Nikon D90 and now that Amazon dropped the price of the D5000, is a much better value. The D90 with the same 18-55 VR is about $ 300 more expensive than the D5000 of this paper. The D5000 uses the same sensor (and a few others), how much more expensive D90 and D300. This is a new camera as the D90. I think, but do not have actual knowledge that would have a positive effect on some of the advanced features of the D5000. I say this because the software is newer than the D5000. He has no problems with noise from the D3000. If you can not pay the D5000, I suggest you consider the D40 (while supplies last) on the D3000. The D40 images are better and cost less. Video - Do not buy a digital SLR to shoot video. NO DSLR from any manufacturer does it really well. The technology is too new. Video on a digital SLR is a gaffe, something clean / fun to play with and not something to be taken too seriously.
