No surprise V1 still has no GPS, no Red Light Camera nor Photo Camera Detection Capability....And the radar false positives were driving me crazy!
But now I have the Escort Passport 9500ix and my drives from Georgia to North Carolina are peaceful again. Highly recommend it and I LOVE being able to plug it in and get INSTANT Red Camera/Photo Camera Data Updates and Software Updates--I'm not stuck having to send my unit in for software updates anymore.....

Initially, I was considering the V1, but when I found out about how often it gives you false alarms, I decided to get the 9500ix instead. The beauty of this detector is the TrueLock feature, which removes false alarms and prevents me from being desensitized, because I only get alarms when it matters. Sure, the learning period is annoying, but even without truelock, it is remarkably quiet. Apparently, the digital signal processing rejects most false signals. I have not had a chance to test the redlight and speedcam detection, but I would not rely too much on it, because even though it uses the DEFENDER database, which is the best, there are still probably locations that it does not know about. A word of caution: DO NOT buy from bestseller21. He is on the Unauthorized reseller list, which means the warranty maybe void if you buy from him.

This is the most effective, quietest detector I have ever used. The auto learning is amazing and produces a very quiet result - - only alarms when needed. The only drawbacks is that to update the device you need to bring an Internet-enabled laptop to the car - that's absurd. Also, I am concerned about the flimsy adapter connecting the power cord to the device. I assume the little plastic tab is going to break easily.

I read through all of the negative reviews and many of the positive ones as well as all the more recent comparisons I could find and then bought the 9500ix.
My prior detector was a Solo S2 that was stolen while I was deployed. I loved that one and so gave strong consideration to the Escort brand. I know folks who love their Valentines, but I was unimpressed by them.
I love it. The only thing I can conclude from the negative reviews is that they failed to read the manual before using it or are religiously devoted to the Valentine One.
1: Failing to alert on speed cams, red light cams, etc: No database is perfect. That's why this product has the ability to mark speed traps, cameras, etc. on the fly. I've used mine for two days and have already marked several types of locations either for flagging or for ignoring which seems to work perfectly.
2: Detection range: Flawless. More than enough, even in the city, to give me time to react but not so much I decide the thing is false-alerting. Within 5 minutes of installing it the thing gave me ample warning of a motorcycle cop approaching with K-Band going and I had almost a full minute to react. Valentine One touts it's very long-detection range. Great, but I don't really care if someone in the next county is pointing a RADAR gun along another road. The detection range on this is excellent without being useless.
3: Really? You're going to complain about the CASE? I don't WANT a ten-pound chunk of magnesium hanging off my windshield. The build quality on this is excellent, solid and...LIGHT.
4: The coiled cord. Eh. Gives me plenty of flexibility. In my Saturn I have to play some games to route it where I want to go, but this is a problem with any cord. Kinda silly to complain that they don't supply you with every kind of cord made when you purchase it.
5: The Display. Seems clear and easy to read to me. Complaints about it not showing the band? RTM again. I switched the voice off on mine and went with the Expert display which gives me a bar display of the strength and band of individual emitters. If I wanted to, I could set it to display the FREQUENCY of individual emitters. I like the quick visual display of my speed upon alert, but I can turn that off if I choose.
6: Display too bright. Press the BRT button to dim it down, or completely dark or set it to auto and let it dim itself at night. And for real? You're going to complain about that tiny little LED on the power adapter? THAT is too bright for you? May I suggest you wear your sunglasses at night? Moonlight must be actively painful. Or, try a piece of tape. I love having both the visual cue and a second mute button available on the adapter.
I LOVE the Auto-Learn feature. There's one stretch I drive through that I was unsure what was being alerted. Three trips through and the thing determined it was a false-alert and now...no more beeps there. I didn't even have to mark the location myself. Conveniently, it indicates it's blocking a signal there with a very unobtrusive rotating GPS symbol so that I can UNBLOCK it if I choose to.
I do a LOT of driving, both city and highway and this appears to be the best detector available for me. If you're a serious driver and exposed to a wide variety of threats, this is an outstanding, if expensive detector with an incredible array of features and highly configurable.

I wanted to like this device: After all, nobody throws down $500 and plans to feel like a chump.
The main feature that excited me about this Passport was the claim that it could notify drivers about speed cameras. There are plenty of fine detectors out there for K band radar and laser traps: But a "smart" detector with GPS and a camera database was hard to resist.
I do not run red lights or do much high speed driving on interstates with 65 and 70 mph limits: But those insidious speed cameras seem to be popping up everywhere-- and it's clearly a money grab that I want to avoid. So I ordered the Passport with high hopes.
Mine arrived quickly from Amazon, and I was impressed with the build quality immediately. I couldn't wait to take it on a test drive. I had a number of "perfect" routes for this: I drove on main roads near schools-- roads where speed cameras had been installed for over two years. In fact, these cameras were so well-known that they appear on many of the free websites and in many of the free GPS databases (like trapster).
The Passport failed to detect a single one of them. I drove by many others throughout the week and did not get a single warning. Figuring that maybe I had not downloaded the latest database, I connected the device to the Escort site and double checked. Yup, it was current.
Trying to connect did expose two other major annoyances: You have to buy your own power cable and mini USB cable to update the device. This seems very cheap and skimpy for a $500 device. And you must use a PC-- no Macs allowed. I happen to have a PC and all of the right cables, but can see why somebody who doesn't would find this irritating: Especially if you're used to GPS devices like Garmins or TomToms-- where everything is relatively easy and included.
In short, the Passport is probably a swell radar detector. If you're just worried about radar and laser traps, it probably is state of the art. And there probably are many other fine detectors that do the same thing for less money.
Bottom line: It didn't live up to my expectations, and I'm glad they have a 30-day return policy.
