"Great GPS, uninterested customer support" 2010-04-09

By Gary R. Hughes (Hastings, MN United States)

This is my 3rd Magellan GPS. I am retired and we travel coast to coast to see family and tour. We use our GPS systems very frequently. I am very satisfied with this unit in all respects except customer support. When I tried to activate my AAA 2 year warranty extension, the site would not allow it. After 3 tries with customer support and their ininterested involvement, I gave up. Makes me wonder what would happen if I need them for some actual problem with the operation of the unit?

"Best Features for the Money" 2010-04-07

By C. Dewey (Greenville, SC)

The Magellan Maestro 4700 offers better features than similarly priced units from Garmin or Tom Tom.

The larger 4.7" screen and loud speaker are particularly helpful for older drivers. Those features made this unit an easy choice as a gift for aging parents who still travel.

GPS routing, spoken street names, etc. all work very well. As well as with any other dedicated GPS unit I have seen.

The mounting bracket is secure, particularly with the adhesive disk on the dashboard.

The POIs are the best I have seen in any dedicated GPS unit, but still contain some out-of-date POIs and lack newer entries.

My main complaint -- which may hold true for most GPS units -- is that the "nearest" algorithm is determined by as-the-crow-flies distance, not driving distance. This seldom matters unless you happen to be on a barrier island. The nearest gas may only be a mile across the river, but may take ten or more miles of driving. Meanwhile the closest gas in terms of driving may appear well down the results list. With no city provided on the results list the only way to determine which is truely the closest is to select each entry one at a time. The RoadMate 2010 app for iPhone does provide the city on each line of the results, so let's hope Megellan adds that feature to its next update. Again, this is only a problem if you are on a barrier island or have some other barrier with no direct route to the POI. Otherwise, it's a non-issue.

My other gripe is that the voice recognition doesn't understand commands from all people equally well no matter how clearly they speak. Let's hope that gets revised as well.

Given that this GPS offers the most features for the money, I still don't see any better options, particularly as a gift for older drivers.

"This Maestro 4700 GPS is not for me" 2010-04-04

By Akwasi Akwaboah (massachussetts)

All I have to say is that, I will not recomended Magellan 4700 Maestro GPS to anyone i know. It gives wrong street names and the voice command is irritating. Hands free phone doesn't work properly. This is my second Maestro 4700 GPS, the first one was returned and I'm returning the second one also. I had been using Navigon 8100T GPS very nice but unfortunately them Europeans took Navigon customers money and run off. I'm going to try Garmin GPS for now.

"A Great Investment from Getting Lost" 2010-04-01

By Careful Shopper (Lorton, VA United States)

I am navigationally challenged and hate getting lost driving to unknown places. I did research for a GPS device that has the least defects and issues. The result was choosing the Magellan Maestro 4700 series GPS. It works great getting me to my locations. I consider it my best friend on the road.

Overall, I am satisfied with my GPS. I had a replacement order due to a missing user manual on CD-ROM. Amazon's customer service informed user manual on CD-ROM is NOT included in the order after contacting Magellan customer service and reinbursed me for the issue. They are supposed to update the "What's in the box" section of the product webpage. It's been a month and Amazon have not updated the information on the product. If anyone orders this product make sure to contact Amazon's customer service for a reinbursement for the Manual CD-Rom. Customers should not pay for something that is not included in the product order.

"So User Friendly Anybody Could Figure It Out!" 2010-03-29

By Suzieq4u (OLDSMAR, FLORIDA, US)

I dropped and broke our Magellan GPS. This model was the next step up from the one we had. Without reading one word from the manual I was able to load our favorite destinations right away. I have no trouble reading the screen at all. The voice volumn is much better than the old one. This model is a slightly bigger screen and thinner than the old one. Forget the credit card and never leave home without this GPS!
